What does it really cost to get PAID?

Reuben Vincent turns hunger into hustle and survival into stardom on "Gotta Get It," built over soulful production from hip-hop architect 9th Wonder.

9th laces the beat, reworking Al B. Sure!'s 1988 R&B classic "Nite and Day" into a motivational street anthem, while the Charlotte, North Carolina native paints himself as a humble soul with audacious ambition:

“Queen City raised the King

Since the Hornets can’t do it, ma, I gotta win a ring.”

On the track, Reuben spits bars that read like confessions from his journey:

I coulda went to Harvard

But see, I chose a HBCU then dropped out, tryna be Shawn Carter

At NCAT passin’ blunts, d*ckin’ down daughters

Thinkin’ to myself like, ‘I gotta go harder.’”

He weaves in life lessons, too:

“They sayin’ if it ain’t trap, I’ll never win

I couldn’t give a f*ck like I’m celibate

It’s evident that

Yeah, hey

I gots to get paid

No church in the wild if we tryna get saved.”

And with wisdom beyond his years, he asks:

“What’s the profit if these people gain the world and lose they soul?

That’s why I learned to stack it and lay low.”

Rather than conforming to industry formulas, Reu makes it clear he's taking the narrow road. He shares that even though he was raised in survival mode, he refuses to stay stuck — illustrating how aspiration paired with authenticity will birth legacy.

In the rollout, Reuben used imagery from the cult-classic Paid in Full to amplify his message. The film mirrors the same tug-of-war RV raps about — the pursuit of success weighed against the cost of consequence. As Ace hustled to provide for his family, The General echoes that battle: “Got family to feed, ain’t no time to be afraid.

While Paid in Full warns that not all money is good money, Reuben is aware of the stakes, but determined to move with purpose.

"Gotta Get It" arrives as the first single from Reuben Vincent's debut album, fully produced by 9th Wonder, following their 2024 surprise collab mixtape Hit Me When You Get Here.
